The Regroupement des Artistes des Cantons de l’Est (RACE) is the only artist-run centre in the Estrie region of Quebec. It is located in downtown Sherbrooke in a neighbourhood with a growing number of arts and cultural activities. RACE owns a building with numerous facilities: a gallery whose configurations can be modified to suit; the HORACE gallery (able to accommodate one or two exhibitions at a time); and, on the production side, a collective studio; an engraving studio; a photographic darkroom; a needlework studio; a woodworking shop; a research and documentation centre; and a studio-residence, which is under construction. Our collective is engaged in thinking about and enquiring into contemporary art by presenting works of art deriving from every discipline in a dynamic environment, one open to the exchange and sharing of ideas, public awareness and experimentation. Under its new formulation, exhibitions are now presented as part of activities we call “event laboratories”. These thematic event laboratories will be organized around exhibitions, skills acquisition workshops and public talks, debates or conferences. This spirit of enquiry also includes off-site public events and projects carried out by artists in residence. Ours is a rigorous project of bringing to the forefront projects and events which contribute to thinking about the situation of contemporary art today. In this light, RACE invites artists to propose projects which promote encounters and exchanges between artists and the public in the Estrie region.
