La Galerie Verticale Art Contemporain was inaugurated on October 9, 1991. It was founded by a Laval artists' association, la Société des arts visuels de Laval, which was incorporated in 1987. The association evolved into an artist-run space in order to facilitate the practice of the artistic profession in Laval. The particular self-governance context of the artist-run centre enables it to be flexible and responsive to the needs of the artists within a perspective of visual art research and development. The centre strives to be a dynamic place for exchange and for the elaboration of artistic thought in order to contribute to the development of contemporary art in Laval. La Galerie Verticale Art Contemporain is the only artist-run centre in Laval. Its mandate is to promote the dissemination and production of, and creative research in, contemporary art to the public of the greater Montreal area. It also encourages parallel activities and cultural exchanges between artists, the public and the art world so as to stimulate reflection on contemporary art practices and theories. By its geographic location on Montreal's periphery, la Galerie Verticale aims to be a launching pad for emerging artists whom it exhibits within its own space and at an annual group exhibition. It is interested in all current questions regarding suburban territories that redefine aesthetic perception and explore the parameters of new media or revisit traditional media. The windowless exhibition space allows a very pure approach to the presentation of artworks. The documentation centre's reading room, where openings are held, is a most inviting and pleasant space and an ideal setting for the development of special projects.
