Profile

Est-Nord-Est, founded in 1992, is a centre for production and dissemination of contemporary art; its primary objective is to provide support, through residencies, for artists who are in the process of research and exploration. The residencies give artists an opportunity to withdraw from daily life and work in a cultural space that is distinct, vibrant and stimulating. At Est-Nord-Est, we offer a warm welcome, dialogue with the local art community, and exchanges with experienced artists of different origins. Est-Nord-Est produces thematic events, exhibitions, public talks, publications, open houses, and creative workshops for young people linked to its residency program. Among its publications is the biennial catalogue Mémento, a record of the artists who have been in residence and their work. Est-Nord-Est is also working toward implementation of a development plan whose goal is to erect a new building and purchase specialized equipment. Although our technical expertise, tools, and equipment meet above all the needs of sculpture and related art practices, we are open to all approaches: installations, in situ works, photography, video, painting, and so on. We encourage experimentation with new materials and methods as well as reflection on art practices. Est-Nord-Est is located in the village of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. The river, forest, farms and the Appalachian mountain range strongly define the region’s landscapes. Est-Nord-Est is a member the Res Artis network of artists’ residencies and provides hosting facilities for the Pépinières Européennes pour jeunes artistes. Our residencies are aimed at visual artists and curators—both those starting their career and those who are well established. There are three two-month sessions each year, in spring, summer, and fall, and each brings together up to six artists from Quebec, the rest of Canada, and other countries. Artists in residence have access to a private studio and a range of technical and logistical services.
