USED/Goods

August 23, 2010

USED/Goods is a 260-page, full colour, bilingual book based on an innovative project that took place at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Montreal, Quebec. Twelve artists created artworks directly in, on, or amongst the aisles, walls and shelves of the store. In addition to experiencing the artwork, customers were invited to drop into Talk Show, a series of events and workshops that included classes, presentations and discussions on topics ranging from learning how to draw, recycling, and how to stretch your budget.

Like the exhibition and events, this ambitious book considers important social, cultural and aesthetic concerns, including the complex relationship between art and life; public awareness of Montreal's working poor; the presentation of art in real world environments where audiences have little or no knowledge of contemporary art; and the social significance of artists' use of everyday objects.

Artists who participated in the project include:

Gisele Amantea, Jo-Anne Balcaen Christopher Flower, Léopold L. Foulem, Jennifer Gabrys, Diane Morin, Serge Murphy, Lorraine Oades, Daniel Olson, Kim Sawchuk, Catherine Sylvain and Mindy Yan Miller.

Essays are by Sandra Buckley, Jennifer Gabrys, Kim Sawchuk, Sherry Simon and Valerie Rousseau.

USED/Goods features extensive visual representation of the work in the exhibition; in-depth interviews with the artists; essays by five noted critics and scholars that place the project in larger critical contexts; documentation of Talk Show and the workshops, including an interview with Kelly Lynne Wood who organized these events; and an introduction by the Cut Rate Collective.

260 pages, colour, 2009.
